JOHN C. ESPLAND
John Claire Espland, 81, quietly passed away March 5, 2020 at his home in North County, with family & friends in attendance.
John Claire Espland, 81, quietly passed away March 5, 2020 at his home in North County, with family & friends in attendance. It was hard to say good-bye to this hardworking, loyal & upstanding Christian man, but knowing he has gone to a place of unending joy with the Lord, lifts our hearts with praise & thanksgiving.
John has been suffering from Parkinson's & COPD for the last several years, but even with the added stress of Parkinson's' related dementia this last year or so, he never lost his love & gratitude for Jesus. He would tell you, Dear Reader, that Jesus loves you ~ whatever your race, religion or creed... Jesus loves you.
Proud of his Norwegian descent, John was born in Chester, South Dakota on December 22nd, 1938 to John and Ada (Gill) Espland and into a big Lutheran family. He was a mischievous, but kindhearted, 5th son. Being a typical Mid-western farm boy, he learned to be a hardworking, frugal and cautious man. He took these values to heart and lived them until the day he died.
After serving in the Army and National Guard, he found himself driving a 100 Ton truck at the Kaiser Steel Mine in Eagle Mountain, Ca. He married Antoinette Louise (Sanuy) in 1965 and had two daughters, Robin Elizabeth and Kathleen Marie. Here, the couple was very involved with the Youth Ministry at Eagle Mountain Methodist Church. They discovered the joy of being part of a caring group of people who loved the Lord and enjoyed working to give back to their little mining town community.
He and Toni moved to La Mesa in 1971 and later settled in Lemon Grove, Ca, joining Lemon Grove Lutheran Church. John began a new career in the grocery industry with Alpha Beta and soon enough, landed the role of Produce Manager for the brand new Alpha Beta in Coronado, Ca. His career at that store spanned from the early 1970's to his retirement in 2001. He knew and loved his customers, so whether the name was Alpha Beta, Lucky’s or finally Albertson's, his careful, diligent work and his twinkling, blue eyed smile were respected, appreciated and valued by those who knew him. He was very involved with Kiwanis and assisted a Tijuana orphanage for many, many years.
John and Toni moved to Rancho Peñasquitos in 1977 and continued raising their girls in this new and burgeoning community. John continued to commute to Coronado, Toni continued her career working for” Ma Bell” and the family joined Rancho Peñasquitos Lutheran Church. They divorced amicably in the mid 1980's and continued to partner in parenting because they knew it was best for their girls.
He met, fell in love with, and married Sherry Sue (Parker) December 5, 1987 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in El Cajon, CA. John loved Sherry’s children, Tina and Robert Bowers, like his own and strove to be the best step-father he could. The family lived in both Rancho Peñasquitos and Mira Mesa. They attended 1st Baptist Church of Mira Mesa for 25 years. After retirement he volunteered in many ways but the thing that brought his soul the most joy was his help with the California Southern Baptist Convention’s Disaster Relief Mission. He built, did plumbing, cleared debris, fed people and anything else that was needed in Tsunami destroyed Bande Ache; earthquake ravaged Chile; hurricane devastated Haiti, New Orleans, Florida and Texas. He would’ve continued on if he himself had not also been under attack by nature. The Parkinson’s took away what was most important to him, his ability to serve the Lord by working.
John spent as much time with his family & friends as possible. He lived to greet familiar clerks, bank tellers, and employees of his local Stater Bro’s. He spread Jesus' love and blessings verbally, instead of through works, by wishing everyone well. Although his smile became stiffer as the Parkinson’s progressed, his blue eyes still twinkled. His favorite pastimes these last few years were visiting with as many people as he could, eating ice cream & being at church with his beloved brothers and sisters of the spiritual kind.
John was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers; Howard William, Donald John, Gary Dean & David Andrew Espland. He is survived by his brother Robert Thomas Espland, 92, of Volga, SD. He leaves behind his widow Sherry; ex-wife Antoinette Berthelotte; children Robin (Kaufman), Kathleen (Harris); step-children Tina (Colangelo), and Robert; his son-in-laws Michael, Paul and John; 8 grand-children and 2 great-grandsons.
He will be interred at Miramar National Cemetery in a private ceremony. Due to COVID19, John’s Memorial Service has been postponed until restrictions on social gatherings have been lifted. Until then, may the Lord lift up your worry, fill your hearts with peace and keep you safe.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following institutions in John’s name:
CSBC – California Southern Baptist Convention’s Disaster Relief Services
NCPSG – North County Parkinson’s Support Group
Bethel Church’s Uganda Missions

RAUL A. MILLER
I can’t speak for others but I will tell you this about him. Dad was 96 years old when he passed away from cancer. His suffering is now over.
10/31/1923 - 11/2/2019
I can’t speak for others but I will tell you this about him. Dad was 96 years old when he passed away from cancer. His suffering is now over. Dad was a proud but humble father, grandfather and great grandfather. Ever since mother (Frances Yvonne Miller) died on October 5, 2007, he had a huge void in his heart. Some saw it, others didn’t. He was a very wise and quiet man who didn’t like conflict. He would be disappointed watching the true character in others that his death brings out. But, he knew it was going to happen. He was a man who proudly served in the Army during WWII and the Korean War. He loved God and he loved our country. He worked hard to provide for us and give us every opportunity to succeed in life. He (and mother) instilled values in us to help make us better people. I suppose each of us have to look within ourselves to see which of those values we apply. He enjoyed having family around but he would just sit and wait until family wasn’t to busy with their own lives. He physically suffered for many years but would try to hide that suffering from others. Some of his scars he couldn’t hide so he would just make jokes about them. Now that dad has passed away, will he be missed? Fact is, dad already knew the answer to that question. Seeing as this is about Raul A. Miller, the names of us who are left behind really shouldn’t matter.
Love you dad and I will miss you.

January 23, 1935 – April 22, 2019
Janet Constance Shore Boysen, 84, of Oceanside, CA died peacefully in the loving arms of her husband Jack, son and daughter Eric and Dortha, her daughter-in-law Robynne and her beloved pastor Beth Johnson at 6:31 pm on Earth Day, April 22, 2019. Jan leaves behind, in addition to family noted above, her son-in-law Edward Zinke and grandchildren Chandler and Spencer Zinke, and Amanda, Zoralei, Joseph, Enoch, Mahonri, Esmyral and Renaria Boysen. She is also survived by her first cousins Tom and Geoff Hargreaves, Jim Thornton and Becky Mausolf, as well as countless friends and relatives around the globe.
Jan was born January 23, 1935 to Delbert and Dorothy Shore at the Worthington, MN hospital which served her small nearby town of Rushmore. It was in Rushmore that she was raised, attended elementary school, and made many life-long friends. She graduated from Worthington High School as salutatorian.
Graduating magna cum laude in 1957 from the University of Minnesota with a BA in Journalism and a minor in Geology, Jan began writing for Minnesota Motorist Magazine of the Minnesota State Automobile Association, the state AAA affiliate. It was there in Minneapolis that she met and married Jack at the First Universalist Church. Their association with the Unitarian-Universalist movement continued in each community in which they lived.
After brief residence in Rapid City, SD where Eric was born and Jacksonville, FL where Dortha was born, Jan and Jack moved to the Washington, DC metropolitan area, first to Rockville, MD, then to Reston and later Vienna, VA.
Janet returned to the world of work at the leading edge of a generation of women who sought a larger role in the world than the confines of hearth and home. While living in Rockville, she leveraged her geology minor and wrote for GeoTimes, the journal of the American Geosciences Institute. Jan later worked at Robert E. Perry High School as a teacher’s aide, beginning her long association with public education.
After the move to Reston in 1971, Jan again worked as a teacher’s aide at Langley High School in McLean, VA. When a vacancy opened in the Langley Science department, she became an Earth Science teacher.
Janet left teaching after Dortha’s high school graduation in 1982 and resumed her writing career, this time for National Wildlife magazine, the flagship publication of the National Wildlife Federation. She made a home there as an advocate for ecology and stewardship of the environment. Starting as a clerk, Jan worked her way up through the organization until her name found its way to the masthead as an associate editor and staff writer.
Retiring in 1991, Jan and Jack relocated to Oceanside, CA. Retirement is in many ways a misstatement as she became highly involved with the Palomar Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, serving in many capacities including a pastoral search committee, in the choir, and as fellowship archivist. She also served as president of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women, and led AAUW’s education program about the history of California. She shared her passion for genealogy with her multi-volume family history beginning with The Family Quilt, a project to which she devoted herself for over 10 years, and which has enjoyed wide circulation among her scattered relatives.
This warm-hearted woman won friends everywhere she went. As an accomplished writer, Jan’s skill with the written word was inspiring and brought people together. Her descriptions are works of art, connecting generations. Her home remains a reflection of Jan’s beauty, open and inviting, with colorful gardens she lovingly tended, a picturesque view of the mountains and city below, and rooms filled with mementos representing a rich tapestry of cultures from around the globe. Jan made everyone feel like family.
Janet fought for life against breast cancer and complications of pneumonia and a stroke that ultimately she was unable to overcome. Attending her in her last hours were family gathered from California, Washington, Utah, Colorado, and Norway.
Jan will be honored in a memorial service on June 29, 2019 at 3:00 pm at the Palomar Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1600 Buena Vista Drive, Vista, CA 92081.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation at 28 West 44th Street, Suite 609, New York, NY 10036 or online at www.bcrf.org; or to the Palomar U-U Fellowship at 1600 Buena Vista Drive, Vista, CA 92081.
